The Metaroom Cloud & Edge Computing Architecture
Our agile microservice-based software architecture combines the benefits of high-performance cloud computing with the advantages of calculations directly on the smartphone or tablet (I.e. the edge device). Since the scan data is generated with the phone, the efficient real-time computation of the room geometry on this edge device allows for rapid feedback to the user during the scan. The user can react during the scanning process, e.g. if certain room elements are not detected properly. In addition, this allows to delete any for the application scenario non-relevant but privacy-revealing data.
For example, if the user erroneously scans a person, the face can be immediately detected and removed from the input data. In a current research project, we aim to identify all kinds of data. Thereby the data sent to the cloud can be efficiently filtered and the amount of data finally transferred can be reduced since not all input data is relevant. Since data transfer corresponds to a significant amount of energy consumption, our strategy also helps to optimize the ecological footprint of our service.
